Change in Exam Pattern/Process of JEE through JEE 2013
With the launching of common engineering entrance exam called Join Entrance Exam (JEE) in 2013, Engineering Entrance exam process in India has undergone major changes. This blog post is an introductory article (in a series of articles on JEE 2013) to articulate those changes – it help you gather concepts regarding what are the changes brought through JEE 2013 in the entrance exam processes in India. In short it tells you what is JEE 2013.
In the subsequent blog articles titled as below, I would provide the prep-materials for the two parts of JEE 2013:
JEE (Advanced) Exam pattern, Syllabus, Papers & Books.
You must have known that JEE 2013 Notification has already come out. You can find details about it in my article titled: JEE 2013 Notification, Forms & Eligibility.
First let us know what was the engineering entrance exam process in India before JEE 2013.
Prior to JEE 2013:
There were two main national level engineering entrance exams:
1.0 IIT-JEE conducted by IITs: for admissions to IITs, IISER, RGIPT etc.
2.0 AIEEE conducted by CBSE: for admissions to NIT, IIIT, DTU & other CFTI.
In addition to these two main engineering entrance exams, there were other exams conducted by State Government (like EAMCET, GUJCET, Karnataka CET, Maharashtra CET) as well as by individual institutes.
However, for JEE 2013, the most relevant exams are AIEEE & IIT-JEE. Why? Because JEE 2013 has been formulated based on these two exams, replacing the two exams through two JEE parts: JEE (Main) & JEE (Advanced). JEE (Main) is the new avatar of AIEEE while JEE (Advanced) is the new IIT-JEE.
Post JEE 2013:
As said, JEE (Main) has replaced AIEEE & JEE (Advanced) has replaced IIT-JEE.
In addition:
1.0 Class-XII Board exam marks would also be used to prepare the merit list for JEE (Main). Weightage of Class-XII Board exam marks would be 40% while that of JEE (Main) would be 60%.
2.0 In above merit list, you have to be within top 1.5 lakh rank to be able to appear in JEE (Advanced). In other words, JEE (Main) has become the qualifying exam for JEE (Advanced).
Thus what has changed through the new JEE - JEE 2013?
1.0 Previously you did not have to bother that much for Class-XII Board exam marks – for IIT JEE only 60% was required for GEN/OBC candidates while for others only 55% was required. For AIEEE on the other hand, there was no minimum %age of Class-XII marks. You just had to pass Class-XII Board exam!
Now you have to score as much mark as possible in Class-XII – because even a 1% mark may be vital in deciding your fate in the merit list of JEE (Main).
2.0 Previously for IITs, you had to appear in only one exam – IIT JEE. Now not only you have to appear in two exams: JEE (Main) & JEE (Advanced), you also have to be within top 1.5 lakh rank holders in the merit list to be able to appear in JEE (Advanced).
Admission Process post JEE 2013?
With above changes brought through JEE 2013, admission/entrance for NITs & IIT will be as given pictorially in the right.
The exam pattern of JEE (Main) will be same as that of AIEEE & the pattern of JEE (Advanced) same as that of IIT-JEE.
So that leaves with not much botheration about change in the exam pattern of JEE. Only now you have to worry about your Class-XII Board performance!
