Department of Posts, Govt. of India has just yesterday published the Recruitment Notification 2014 for a huge vacancy of 8243 Postal Assistants & Sorting Assistants. This recruitment is going to be done for the 22 Postal Circles of Postal Department. As per the notification, online application form has started from today and the last date for submission of form is 27th March, 2014.
This post summarizes the important information contained in the above notification, also archiving the same, so that the information can be used by future Postal Assistant aspirants. But before that, a small discussion on what is Department of Post in a nutshell:
What is Department of Post:
Department of Post is a part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology under the Govt. of India. It was founded in 1764. Headquartered in New Delhi, it has 155,333 post offices in each and every nook and corner of India, manned by over 5 lakh employees. Owing to this far-flung reach and its presence in remote areas, the Indian postal service is also involved in other services such as small savings banking and financial services.
India has been divided into 22 postal circles, each circle headed by a Chief Postmaster General. Each Circle is further divided into field units, called Divisions, headed by a Postmaster General. Other functional units like Circle Stamp Depots, Postal Stores Depots and Mail Motor Service may exist in the Circles and Regions. Besides the 22 circles, there is a special Circle called the Base Circle to cater to the postal services of the Armed Forces of India.

Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant vacancies in Department of Post:

2). Foreign Post Organization.
3). Returned Letter Offices.
4). Mail Motor Services.
5). Circle And Regional Offices.

The duties of a postal assistant in Indian postal departments are as follows:
:: Receipt and registration of dak.
:: Disposal of dak by submitting in files.
:: Maintenance of rulings and circulation thereof.
:: Noting and drafting.
:: Maintenance of reminder diary, guard files.
:: Processing of Parliament Questions and VIP references.
In addition to above, Postal Assistants working in PLI (Postal Life Insurance) Branch discharge following other duties:
:: Data entry operation on computers.
Generation of various information reports for –
:: Preparation of History sheets.
:: Issue of new policy.
:: Posting of premium in individual a/c.
:: Processing of loan applications.
:: Settlement of claim.
:: MIS
Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant salaries:
Salary (scale of pay ) for Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant being offered by Department of Post is Rs. 5200 - 20200 + Grade pay Rs. 2400/- + admissible allowances.
Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant Eligibility:
Age Eligibility: (as on last date of receipt of of application i.e. 27/03/2014)
Min. age: 18 years, Max. age: 27 years
Educational Qualifications Eligibility:
a) Eligibility for Postal Assistant/ Sorting Assistants :
i) Passed Class-XII Examination with English as a compulsory subject from a recognized Board
iii) Should have studied local language of the State or Union Territory of the Postal Circle concerned or Hindi as a subject at least in Matriculation or equivalent.

Selection process for Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant in Department of Post:
The selection process for these positions in Department of Post consists of 100 mark written test followed by a qualifying Computer Typing Test.
